Christmas Day, 2013
Last night, after tracking Santa for quite some time, I knew it was time for bed. I got to sleep after 11:00. For some reason, I woke up at 1:45 a.m. I decided to come out to the room where my computer is and check on Santa's progress. I had left the computer on, so the NORAD Santa tracking screen came right up. What a coincidence! Santa was just leaving Portland and headed for Seattle! I must have heard hooves on the roof and I believe that's what woke me up. What a gift, to know that Santa was here....and I just missed him!
What a wonderful day! We had our friends Al and DeAnna over for brunch: scrambled eggs with sausage, peppers, onions and mushrooms; fresh fruit bowl; Amish Country baked oatmeal; a variety of breads (pumpkin, cranberry-orange and banana nut); Mimosas and coffee. Yum! Afterwards, Al played the keyboard and Robert (Chief Grey Wolf) played his 12-string guitar; DeAnna and I sang Christmas carols. We didn't sound bad, considering the two men are Jews, but they held their own with the Christmas carols. Al is retired, so he (and occasionally) DeAnna visit retirements homes and entertain the residents with their music.
Here is a photo of our Christmas tree. The photograph does not do it justice. It's a large, full, lush noble fir and it's covered with ornaments, although it's hard to tell from the photos I have taken. Maybe it's time for a new and improved camera. Here is also a photo of Robert playing his 12-string guitar. A lovely day, a beautiful Christmas. I hope the Christmas spirit lasts a few more days, at least. If only people would remember why we celebrate this season. Only God, through His Son, can bring everlasting peace.

Christmas Eve! December 24, 2013
It's almost 11:00 p.m. and I am following the NORAD Santa Tracker. He was last seen in Des Moines, Iowa, and is headed to Lawrence, Kansas. I am estimating that Santa will be here on the West coast around midnight or possibly closer to 1:00 a.m. If you have never tracked Santa before on Christmas Eve, I encourage it. You can find him at noradsanta.org.
We attended a lovely Christmas Eve service this evening at my church: Multnomah Presbyterian Church in Portland. Robert (Chief Grey Wolf) played his 12-string guitar in the orchestra. All of the choir members and musicians did a fantastic job. Ray McKean, the Music Director, is incredibly talented and gets a lot of people involved. Our pastor, The Rev. Dr. John Dilworth gave an excellent message as well: "Jesus Remembered".
Wishing you all a very wonderful Christmas. Remember: Jesus is the reason for the season. God came to earth to dwell among us.

Here it is December already. We had the most glorious Autumn in the Northwest....a long, warm and dry season with the most amazing fall colors. I took a few pictures of some of the trees in the neighborhood as I was driving around. The photos do not do the trees justice. Colors of magenta, burgundy, gold, mustard, hot pink...truly amazing colors. In fact, it was quite dry, which is unusual for the Pacific Northwest. It seems funny to be needing to water the trees, flowers and bushes in October, but that is what I actually did. And shortly thereafter a drenching rain came and got all the trees watered. So, we were sort of back to normal. Now we are in December and it has also been very unusual. We have had unseasonably cold weather for the past week. The temperatures last night were around 13 degrees. That is extremely unusual for us, as we seldom get below freezing; maybe 28 degrees, but that is rare. Needless to say, we have all been grumbling because we are not used to real cold weather in western Oregon. However, a 'warming trend' is heading our way. Things will be back to normal by Wednesday, with some showers and temps in the 40's - that's what we are used to. When it is cold here, it's clear. When it's rainy and cloudy, it's warm (30's and 40's). So we hardly ever see snow. Most of us would love to have a white Christmas, but that is very rare.

Book recommendations:
On another note: I have been reading a series of books by Alexander McCall Smith. He is the author of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency Series of books. If you have not read that series, I highly recommend you do so. It is a delightful series, and will give you some wonderful insights into life in Botswana, Africa. Humorous, poignant.
The series I am presently reading is The Isabel Dalhousie Series.
The series of novels includes:
I love McCall-Smith's use of language. He is a Scotsman, well educated, and knows how to tell a story. He is professor emeritus of medical law at the University of Edinbugh in Scotland has served on many national and international bodies concerned with bioethics. Read the books in order, as they are a continual story.
To be continued...........

Because of the extreme cold, we did not go out looking to purchase a Christmas tree to put in the house. That will be later this week. Oregon is one of the largest growers of Christmas trees in the United States.

The above is on YouTube. It's a 'story' about Robert and me. I created this photo montage as a celebration of our 13th wedding anniversary on April 25, 2012. We were married in 1999 and in April of 2014 we will celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. Robert promises that we will do something momentous for this occasion. You will notice the photographic references to Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy/ Katherine Hepburn characters in their movies. He sees us in the same manner: he as the sweet but crusty riverboat captain, and me as the prim spinster OR, the two characters that Tracy/Hepburn played, where they were the smart couple whose bantering dialogue expresses their intellect, wit and, as it turns out, genuine love for each other. We love to watch those old movies, as we see so much of ourselves in the characters.

Have you ever wished you could 'go back' about 40 years and do everything over...differently? Make different educational choices, career choices, pursue different relationships? Well, that's where I am. And over the past few weeks I have been hearing this song on the radio (below). Since I was not catching all of the words, I did a Google search, and found the lyrics and YouTube video. It has some great words. Maybe it's not too late.

I'm tired
I'm worn
My heart is heavy
From the work it takes to keep on breathing
I've made mistakes
I've let my hope fail
My soul feels crushed
By the weight of this world
And I know that you can give me rest
So I cry out with all that I have left
Let me see redemption win
Let me know the struggle ends
That you can mend a heart that's frail and torn
I want to know a song can rise
From the ashes of a broken life
And all that's dead inside can be reborn
Cause I'm worn
I know I need
To lift my eyes up
But I'm too weak
Life just won't let up
And I know that You can give me rest
So I cry out with all that I have left
Let me see redemption win
Let me know the struggle ends
That you can mend a heart that's frail and torn
I want to know a song can rise
From the ashes of a broken life
And all that's dead inside can be reborn
Cause I'm worn
And my prayers are wearing thin
I'm worn even before the day begins
I'm worn I've lost my will to fight
I'm worn so heaven come and flood my eyes
Let me see redemption win
Let me know the struggle ends
That you can mend a heart that's frail and torn
I want to know a song can rise
From the ashes of a broken life
And all that's dead inside can be reborn
Yes all that's dead inside will be reborn
Though I'm worn
Yeah I'm worn

Thursday evening, 10/17/13, continued....
Yesterday evening we had some neighbors over. I asked one of our neighbors, Steve, what he would like to drink. Well, as it turns out, he wanted some white wine. However, I had no white wine chilled, so I offered him a Pinot Rose which was chilling in the refrigerator. I have to say, we both enjoyed it very much. It is from Hawkins Cellars, Stormy Morning Vineyard, Willamette Valley, Oregon, 2012. As many of you know, wines from Oregon are becoming very well known and appreciated, especially Pinot Noirs. This was an especially yummy Rose.

I made a large pot of chicken tortilla soup this evening. I had bought a rotisserie chicken from Costco yesterday and made a chicken salad with some of the chicken. However, there was plenty of chicken still on the bones. So I took the remaining chicken off the bones, cooked the bones in water to make a soup base then added:
Chopped onions, carrots and celery; 1 can of creamed corn; 1 can of pinto beans, 1 can of white beans, canned diced tomatoes. Spices to taste: garlic powder, salt and pepper, cumin powder, hot pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, 21 Seasons. Add the chicken which you had removed from the bones before cooking the bones. Let all ingredients simmer to blend the flavors. Just before serving, add strips of corn tortillas. Low fat and very yummy. Play around with this to suit your particular tastes.
